The city remains an unincorporated area of Santa Clara County and is adjacent to the city of Palo Alto. Stanford is a private university located approximately 37 miles south of San Francisco and 20 miles north of San Jose. According to the United States Census Bureau, Stanford has a total area of 2.8 square miles. Notably, 2.8 square miles is land and 0.04 square miles is water. As of the 2000 census, there were 13,314 people, 3,207 households, and 1,330 families residing in Stanford. The University was founded by railroad magnate and California Governor Leland Stanford and his wife, Jane Stanford.
